Great yarmouth escape room visit

Introduction

On 7/11/2023 I went to the Great Yarmouth Escape Rooms with my level 4 games development class and on this trip we go to experience what an escape room feels like gathering knowledge on how each puzzle is set up to create a realistic and interesting feel. This trip was very useful to us as apart of one of our next assignments is to create our own escape rooms working in teams.

My experience

My experience with the escape room was great as the people I was paired with made each puzzle really fun to complete together, being able to joke around yet also be scared. What I mean by scared was the escape room my group completed was a horror escape room where you have to figure out how the family disappeared miraculously etc. It was very intriguing how they used the lighting, sound effects and jump scares to get you immersed into the experience making you feel like it was all real. This immersion allowed for a better player experience meaning people are more likely to want to do it again or to recommend the place. I liked the intensity of the room and the fun of how I handled it by exploring at my own pace but it was still timed so we wanted to complete somewhat quickly. The room ended up taking us 45 minutes roughly which isn't too bad, but we did use help for many silly things and didn't need it much. There were some obstacles though which we needed a lot of help as we didn't have the required skill set to pass it.

what I like

What I liked about the escape room was the way it made me feel as if I was actually in a haunted place. The puzzles were the right amount of difficulty so that we could have fun figuring them out and complete them but not so much we cant progress. What I really liked was how team work was incorporated in the escape room where we all could join in with the puzzles and combine all of our knowledge to complete them.

what I would change

Me personally would only change the size of the escape room as it was really exciting and fun to play but felt like it would be better bigger. With more room and more tricks and jump scares in the room would make for a funny experience whilst also being scary.

how its inspired me for my own escape room idea

The escape room has helped with my own idea as its allowed me to get a fell of puzzles in an escape room, what order they should be done in and get a feeling of what its like to do one. Using what I learnt from the experience I know how to incorporate different aspects into my games.
